Why the seal goes before the cooling does
A door gasket is rubber with a magnet in it, and it lives half in and half out of the cabinet. Salt-laden air hardens the outer face while the inner face stays cold and supple, and a seal that has lost its spring stops making the last millimetre of contact along the top edge.
Nothing dramatic follows. The cabinet just works a little harder, all day, every day, and by the time somebody notices the running has changed there is usually frost somewhere too. Checking the compression takes thirty seconds and it is done here whatever the booking was for.
The other thing the air reaches
Condenser fins are thin aluminium in open air behind the grille. They do not rot so much as thin out, and a coil that has lost surface rejects less heat without looking any different from the front. It shows up as a cabinet that holds in January and struggles in September.
Both of those are cheap to catch and awkward to ignore, which is the whole argument for having someone look at the grille while they are here for something else.
