Why narrow beats broad on this equipment

A built-in is not a large domestic fridge. A combination cabinet runs two separate cooling circuits, it is designed to be serviced in place, and the parts and failure patterns have almost nothing in common with a free-standing unit. Someone who sees these cabinets every week recognises a defrost fault from the frost pattern and a starved condenser from the running temperatures — and both of those cost a generalist an hour of guessing.

It also means we say no sometimes. Ranges, ovens, dishwashers and laundry are not our trade. If you call about one, you will get told that rather than booked in.

What Los Angeles does to refrigeration

Almost every summer failure we see was already in progress. A condenser half-blocked with dust holds temperature through a mild week and gives up on the first run of days over 90°F, which is why so many people describe a failure as sudden. Above the canyons the coils load faster; near the water the gaskets and exposed fins go first. Both are cheap to catch early and expensive to ignore.

It is also why readings get taken under load rather than at rest. A cabinet that looks fine at nine in the morning can be four degrees out by late afternoon, and only one of those two measurements is worth writing down.
