A cabinet sized for a house, fitted into a flat
Most of the refrigeration along this stretch went into an opening somebody else had already decided the size of. A wall between two apartments cannot move, a riser cannot move, and the run of units either side of the appliance was drawn to fill the room rather than to feed a coil. What gets sacrificed is the gap the manufacturer wanted around the machine.
Nothing fails on the day that happens. The cabinet holds its setting perfectly through a mild spring, and then spends a warm September evening with a fan turning against air that has already been through the condenser once. The part that eventually gives out is the cheapest one on the list, and it gives out because of a decision made years before anybody called.
The room heats up while the food cools down
A refrigerator does not destroy heat; it moves it from inside the box to the room the box stands in. In a kitchen with a door, a window and some floor area that is invisible. In a closed galley with the oven on, it is a loop: the coil pushes heat out, the room hands it straight back, and the compartment loses a degree or two by the end of the evening and finds it again overnight.
That pattern — fine in the morning, drifting by nine, back to normal by breakfast — is worth saying on the phone, because it points away from the expensive part of the machine before anybody arrives.
Getting in, and getting the thing out
The practical half of a visit here is the building. Which door, which lift, where a van can legally stand, and whether the kitchen is at the end of a corridor a column cannot be turned in. None of it is difficult and all of it decides whether the work finishes on the visit or comes back for a second one.
So it is asked at booking rather than discovered in a lobby.
