The ice maker that lives outside the house

An ice module is a small refrigeration system with one job, and it is sized for the air it was expected to work in. Move it to a bar beside a pool and the same bin takes far more running to fill, because everything the module makes is being worked on by the afternoon at the same time.

Nothing about that is a fault. It is simply a machine spending its life at the top of its range, which is why the water side of it — the valve, the line, the fill tube — tends to be the part that wears out first out here rather than the freezing side.

What a shut-off really costs

When the supply is cut on a hot, windy day and returns some hours later, the cabinet restarts itself and looks entirely well. It is not. The manufacturer asks for a full day for a unit to reach its temperature after being switched on, and ice production is not to be judged until that day is up.

So the honest answer to “should I be worried?” the same evening is usually no, and the honest answer the following afternoon is a different matter. If the fresh-food side is still sitting above its setting by then, something was already wrong before the power went.

Dust is the local tax

Every one of these coils breathes air that has come off a lane, an arena or a paddock. The maker puts six to twelve months between condenser cleanings and asks that the soft aluminium fins are never bent; here the shorter end of that is the sensible reading, and a brush and a vacuum is the whole procedure. No chemical cleaner is wanted on them — the company says so itself.
