Which group your cabinet is in
The split follows the product line, not age. Wine storage, many older refrigeration models and most undercounter cabinets were built with no filter housing at all; the lines that do have one take a push-in or twist-in cartridge. Your use and care guide names which.
What changes without one
Only what the cartridge did: taste, and what the water carries into the ice. Cooling never touches the water path.

- Not something to do on a guess — a line left to a half-fitted housing is how one ends up weeping behind cabinetry. If the cartridge is due, renew it; if you want it gone altogether, have the model checked before anything comes out of the housing.
